What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas unless, of course, you blog, and then the whole world finds out. We discovered a pet-friendly secret nestled deep within the heart of Lake Las Vegas, about a 30 minute drive from the famed Las Vegas Strip. If you are so inclined to travel with your dog, let us introduce you to one of the best kept dog-welcoming secrets around: The Westin Lake Las Vegas nestled in Henderson, Nevada.
We recently visited the resort, yes a resort, while attending the yearly BlogPaws pet bloggers and social media conference. I expected smiles, wags, and a welcoming attitude, but I never expected the huge reception and overall sense of pet friendliness the resort provided to us during our stay.
In my 20+ years of dog-friendly traveling, there are some key things I note when staying at a hotel, B&B, and/or a resort. I also have a list of questions ready to ask staff ahead of time, which we encourage you to keep handy as well. You can catch this list at the bottom after the video. Here are some bonus things we look for when traveling with our dog (which is well, always):
“More than a patch”: Ample grounds upon which to walk with Fido is always a bonus, especially at midnight when nature calls and the dog answers. The Westin Lake Las Vegas has acres of grounds on which to walk your dog.
“Bowl Me Over”: Many properties offer Fido the use of size-specific in-room bowls during his or her stay. In case you forget to pack yours or just need an extra, this added amenity is a thoughtful gesture. The Westin offers this service as well as doggie beds.
No hidden fees: We shriek when hotels and resorts “hide” fees. Please be upfront is what we tell all hotel staff we encounter on check in. At the Westin Lake Las Vegas, there is a limit of one pet per room and a non-refundable cleaning fee of $35, which is oh so reasonable.
Where are dogs allowed? I always ask this and recommend you do, too. At the Westin Lake Las Vegas, pets are allowed everywhere on the property with the EXCEPTION of the pool and restaurant area.
Bonus: If you are into water fun with your dog, try the stand up paddle-boarding on site, and do so with your dog. You’ve got to see the dogs in action, and featured in the video below, you get to see this. While staying at the resort, many of the guests had a blast doing so.
If you like a resort where you can check in, do a little bit of this and that, relax, take walks, enjoy other pet-friendly parents, and chill out, this is highly recommended. I still cannot believe this resort is so far removed from the strip yet close enough that you can head in for some gambling or a show if you desire.
Without further ado, here’s the Westin Lake Las Vegas, featuring me, Carol Bryant, and our PR (Puppy Relations) Manager, Dexter. See if you can find us! Don’t forget to check out the questions to ask hotels before checking in!
Always ask these questions before booking a dog-friendly reservation:
* What is your pet policy?
* Are there any weight limits?
* How many dogs are allowed?
* Is there a fee and how much?
* Is there access to greenery where I can take my dog?
* What is considered your pet amenity?
* Do you provide beds, bowls, blankets, or anything else for usage while staying there?
* Can my dog dine with me al fresco (if a restaurant is on premises)?
* Is there a doggie room service menu?
* Can you recommend nearby places to take my dog (i.e., parks, Fido-friendly welcoming locale, etc)?
