Do you travel with your dog for regular trips and/or for vacations??? We have been doing this for over 20 years, so we know all about the roads less traveled, hotels that claim to be pet friendly and aren’t so great, along with those that go above and beyond for their human and canine guests. Pet-friendly properties are hard to gauge based on what a website says, so when detailed reviews come out, our ears perk up and we read them.

TripAdvisor recently released news of their pet travel survey where 1,100 U.S respondents were asked a variety of pet travel questions. Fifty-one percent of respondents find it challenging to find pet-friendly accommodations. Considering 44 percent of respondents say they will travel with their pets within the next 12 months, Fidose of Reality has the scoop on our top 10 picks for pet-friendly selections across the U.S.

According to TripAdvisor’s survey, these 10 pet-friendly properties rank highest from survey respondents according to the TripAdvisor Popularity Index, which measures the quality, quantity, and recency of TripAdvisor traveler reviews:

Fidose of Reality has 5 picks of our own, since we are headquartered on the East Coast.  Here are 10 properties we’ve stayed at with our dogs and recommend to other pet-friendly travelers:

1 Inn by the Sea – Cape Elizabeth, Maine: Maine is one of the most pet-friendly states I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. Cape Elizabeth is a quiet town in Cumberland County and home to some gorgeous lighthouses. If you stay at the pet-welcoming accommodations at Inn by the Sea, you’ll have access to Crescent Beach and plenty of picturesque trees. The beach is conveniently located behind the inn. Crescent Beach State Park is closed to dogs completely from April 1 to September 30 due to Piper Plover nesting concerns- – although visitors are welcome to walk on the Park trails, and on the path that parallels the beach, or to go to the trails that go around Great Pond. In October the beach is open to dogs again until April.

2 Nemacolin Woodlands – Farmington, Pennsylvania: One of only eight properties worldwide to boast both AAA Five-Diamond and Forbes Five-Star lodging and dining, this luxury getaway is located 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The Chateau Lafayette welcomes dog 50 pounds and under. Down the street is Nemacolin Wooflands, which is a reasonably priced and oh-so-divine getaway for dogs (and cats). This is doggie daycare is great, complete with indoor pool, specialty themed suites and beds, and even a tea room for special parties.

3 Delamar Greenwich Harbor – Greenwich, Connecticut – Nautical nuances and a European flair so impeccably refined, Connecticut’s Delamar Greenwich Harbor is arguably one of the most elegant boutique hotels in the United States. Tailored to nautical perfection, Fido and family celebrate life waterside at this high-end hospitable getaway in the quaint town of Greenwich, Connecticut.

4 Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort – Lake Placid, New York – In the heart of the Adirondack Mountains is this Lake Placid wilderness retreat that marries woodsy flavor with modernity and luxury. Skijoring and cross country skiing along with trail access for people and their pets is at the heart of this property. After a rough day of exercising and exploring, the nearby Lake Placid Holiday Stroll offers music, food, activities, and food samplings.  Guests with dogs stay on the third floor of this property, with 10 percent of each stay donated to a local shelter or humane society. There is no size or weight limitation. Pets incur a $50 per pet, per week fee, which is incredibly reasonable. At the nearby Mt. Van Hoevenberg, visitors can ski or snowshoe the dog-friendly loop, with no fee required for pets.

5 Wilshire Grand Hotel – West Orange, New Jersey - A complimentary breakfast with a huge variety of bagels, goodies, and more, baked fresh on site! This grand hotel located just 30 minutes from New York City is pet welcoming and very accommodating. We are so enthused with this hotel, that the 2014 Wigglebutt Warriors gala, “Wigglebutts Go Hollywoof” is taking place here. Private dog park, pet friendly rooms, beautiful property to walk dogs on, and very helpful and accommodating staff.
